However, ISP-provided routers often struggle with high-bandwidth tasks, smart home management, and extended Wi-Fi range. Switching to bridge mode disables the routing functions of the ZTE F689, turning it into a transparent modem. This allows you to connect a high-performance external router or mesh Wi-Fi system to handle your network traffic without performance bottlenecks.
Because you disabled DHCP, your computer will not automatically get an IP address from the ZTE device. To log back in later, disconnect the modem from your new router and plug it directly into your PC. Manually change your computer's network adapter settings to use a static IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.50 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 ). You can then load 192.168.1.1 in your browser.

The F689, issued by his ISP, was a "gateway"—a modem and router smashed together in a marriage of convenience. It was fine for his neighbor who just wanted to check Facebook, but for Elias, it was a nightmare.
