Hungary joined in 1996 under the coordination of the Bolyai János Mathematical Society (Bolyai Társaság). Since 2000, participation has grown from 30,000 to over 180,000 Hungarian students annually (as of 2023), making it the country’s largest mathematics competition.

Kenguru Matematikai Verseny (Kangaroo Mathematics Competition) is an international, single-session math contest for students of primary and secondary school levels. It emphasizes logical thinking, problem-solving creativity, and enjoyable puzzles rather than rote computation.
