The story of Dream Theater begins not in 1989, but in September 1985 at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was there that guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy formed the initial nucleus of a band originally named . After recruiting keyboardist Kevin Moore and vocalist Chris Collins, the group recorded a demo. However, creative differences led to Collins’ departure, and in November 1987, he was replaced by the distinctive voice of Charlie Dominici. To avoid a legal conflict with another band, Majesty officially became Dream Theater .
